assigning static ip

I am currently having a problem with assigning a static IP address to
my beagleboard. I have followed instructions online, but they don't
seem to work.

When I plug in my BELKIN adapter to the USB hub it renames wlan0 to
wlan2 ([ 192.227020] udev: renamed network interface wlan0 to wlan2).
I am placing the following code into /etc/network/interfaces:

iface wlan2 inet dhcp
     pre-up ifconfig wlan2 up
     pre-up iwconfig wlan2 essid linksys
     wireless_mode managed
     wireless_essid linksys
     wireless_key off

I have also tried (with wlan0 as well AND static). For right now I
just want to see it connect to my network (linksys) with any IP
address before I attempt making it static.

iface wlan2 inet dhcp
     wireless_mode managed
     wireless_essid linksys
     wireless_key off

I then boot up the beagleboard and the following is the command line
response:

root@beagleboard:~#
ifconfig
root@beagleboard:~#

Any ideas?
