backup eMMC image from BBB

The steps for saving off your eMMC contents to a file:

  • Get a 4GB or larger uSD card that is FAT formatted.
  • Make sure that the partition on the uSD card is marked as active.
  • Download beagleboneblack-save-emmc.zip and extract the contents onto your uSD card.
  • Eject uSD card from your computer, insert into powered-off BeagleBone Black and apply power to your board while holding down the S2 button (release button a couple seconds after boot).

I am trying to backup eMMC image from BBB by using SDHC 4GB that is FAT (FAT16) formatted with active state.

I downloaded the file “Beagleboneblack-save-emmc.zip” and extracted the contents onto my prepared uSD card

However, after following next step of “inserting into powered-off BBB and applying power to my board while holding down the S2 button” ,

I cannot notice USR0 start to blink steadily. Rather USR1 and USR3 blink shortly at the same time once and then just USR2 comes on

4GB cards are SDHC, and should be formatted using FAT32. FAT16 devices
tend to be limited to 2GB SD card and under.

Also, if the BBB has a fairly recent OS and boot-loader, you probably
don't need to hold down the boot-select. All images I've used since late
2016 seem to automatically switch to booting from the SD card if it is
installed (u-Boot may be coming from eMMC, but switches to SD card for
actual OS loading).
