OK. So 5V at what current? 1A? 2A? 500ma?

OK. The solution is to get a real power supply. At least 1A. The Ethernet takes a lot of current. If it is connected while booting, it can easily go over 500mA. That is why if you wait, it works better.

Ah. Ok. I missed the bench supply reference in the earlier exchange. Sorry.
Make sure the bench supply negative terminal is grounded so as not to create a ground look when plugging in the Ethernet cable.
