[beagleboard] java on BBB

Hi,

You can install java on beagleboard by installing the below packages using opkg package manager

Thanks,

First, are you really sure you want "Java"?

Or do you want "Javascript" support on the browser?

Java and Javascript are two very different "things". Don't blame me! I did not not name them!

Running a browser with Java support is very dangerous.

Can you give an example of a site that you want/need to use with Java?

My best regards

Search for a browser with Javascript support…

My best regards

That web site uses Adobe Flash, it is no longer supported on arm processors and was never easy to get for beagleboards. Might be able to install an old apk of it onto an Android beagle.

I just went through the same misery for the same reason on the BeagleBone Black. I was able to install Java, but never did get the browser plugin to work. I probably won’t ever use Java, so I’ll just flash the latest distribution and start over with all the tweaks…

People still use java in websites? But either way, it appears the Oracle JRE/JDK is the fastest on ARM so far - http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=6369 and oracle seems to have a guide for java with debian on the raspberry pi. Probably worth a look - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/java/raspberrypi-1704896.html

Oh, just to note - if you purse this make sure to grab the ARMv7 jdk not the ARMv6

These packages are not availbale anymore. Any other way to install Java (not Javascript)? I need this to install ‘Processing’ IDE.

i’m in the same boat, i need processing IDE so far i’ve managed to install oracle java but i need to somehow link that to processing…

Joshua,

Were you able to get Java running? I’m trying to access a Java applet on my website and also went through the Angstrom instructions and here’s what I got::

beagleboard:/home/bob# opkg list_installed |grep java
librhino-java - 1.7r1-r1.6
libswt3.6-gtk-java - 3.6-r0.5
openjdk-6-java - 6b18-1.8-r10.7.6
beagleboard:/home/bob# which java
/usr/bin/java

If got it working would you please try running this app (Morse Code Practice):: http://www.rarcpio.net/CW/

Thanks

There are instructions for installing Java from Oracle on the BB.org website at http://www.beagleboard.org/project/java/

These instructions should work for Angstrom. If you want use Java with a Ubuntu or Debian distribution you will need to download the hard float version instead.

As I posted on that referenced page, I was able to successfully install Java following those directions:

By following these instructions, I was able to successfully download and install the latest Soft Float ABI version (jdk1.7.0_45) onto my BBB.

But, as I also posted on that page, running Java is not the same as being able to use a Java applet in a web browser. I can run local Java applications on the BBB, but I was not able to find support to run Java Applets via a web browser. Disappointing.

On Debian, I found that running ‘sudo apt-get install icedtea-7-plugin’ and starting ‘chromium’ seemed to work just fine.
