[beagleboard] Not able to boot the BeagleBone with Linux 3.8 kernel

So, have you tried updating u-boot to v2013.01?

Regards,

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the pointers.
Updated the u-boot to 2012-10. The board booted up.

Regards,
Vijay

actually I’ll build 2012.10 myself and see what happens… stay tuned…

You know, it sometimes helps to actually follow the wiki directions...

I’m pretty sure I followed the directions for rebuilding u-boot to the letter…
I did all three sections of http://www.eewiki.net/display/linuxonarm/BeagleBone at Bootloader.
Like the original poster, I’m trying to build the kernel from Koen Kooi’s directions.
GitHub - beagleboard/kernel at 3.8
So I didn’t really pay attention to the rest of the wiki page

Rebuilding 2012.10 didn’t work either (and the patches of course did not apply very well)

I’ll keep puzzling over this. I must be missing something simple…
Never was too good at following directions though…
A more explicit hint may be needed later…
besides, vijay updated to 2012.10 when you said update to 2013.01…
don’t I get some credit for following directions there?

Please post your "uEnv.txt", Koen has an example at that site...

Well, for v2012.10, there was a different patchset..

They would have applied cleanly...

I'll keep puzzling over this. I must be missing something simple..

I tried his example uEnv.txt… also tried hitting a key and using u-boot at the command prompt, filling in what seemed to be missing environment variables…

I didn’t see anything in uEnv.txt that seemed to relate to the unsupported machine ID. I didn’t think a bad uEnv.txt could even cause that message… My problem is not in u-boot, it is in uEnv.txt? I wasn’t expecting that…

I thought the supported machine IDs were right in u-boot.img.

Anyway, I’m trying to build your version of the kernel now instead. It’s crunching away right now…
Thanks!
Drew

uEnv.txt just tells the u-boot how to load everything, though there
may be a difference, that could cause the issue..

Heres' mine..

It's the exact same patchset to what is in

Just a slight tweak to the defconfig..

Regards,

same patchset? okay, that’s good to know it isn’t a totally different flavor of beaglebone kernel.

With your uEnv.txt and the zImage I built I get…

Uncompressing Linux… done, booting the kernel.
(hang)

so now maybe I’ve broken it even more, it doesn’t even get to the machine ID error message?
but that’s okay, I learn by mistakes.

I’m going through the rest of the stuff on your wiki page…

Oh, I’m trying to build a low latency desktop version of the kernel; I did change that one option. I’ll also try a stock build instead.

Drew

Yeah, at this point... Don't change the config's too much as it is
very touchy with very large patchset we have for v3.8-rc5..

Regards,

okay…
I set
CC=arm-arago-linux-gnueabi-
in my system.sh to match the tools I have installed
It seemed to compile okay for build_kernel.sh
I’ll try switching to the linaro toolchain.
