beagleboard random mac address

I tried booting from a fresh image, and let it sit for a while (about 45 minutes), but I’m pretty sure it’s hung up - it’s a very small image, just a console, so I wouldn’t think it should take too long, but I never get to the login. It just keeps repeating the “respawning too fast” messages.

These are the entries in inittab that it’s complaining about:

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
S:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 115200 ttyO2

So, it does have the ttyO2 entry, but it’s one of the ones that seems to be causing the problem…

It seems this would have been caught before now, but perhaps something
has changed recently. Most people are using the older Angstrom code
from the stable branch, but I think the Angstrom-core stuff should be
getting pretty well baked.

There is probably a file something like:
/etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/serial-getty\@ttyO2.service

It could be that there are some conflicts between sysvinit scripts and
systemd scripts. I'm going to hope someone more knowledgeable will
chime in before I get a chance to try to reproduce your steps.

What did you select as your init manager? Can you try to select
'systemd' as I think that is the one Koen is testing in Angstrom-core.
I suspect some of the options that don't work need to be removed.

Also, since all you wanted initially was a kernel that was pre-built
with the MAC address fix (to be fixed and unique per board, not
random), you might take the kernel off of this image and use it with
your existing file system. Don't forget to copy the contents of
/lib/module as well as the uImage out of /boot.

Other than selecting core-eglibc, I left everything else as default, so I was using sysvinit. I’ll give it a shot with systemd.

Thanks!
Jenna

I tried it with systemd, but I still never get to a login screen. This time I get no errors, but I left it for over an hour and it never came up (full serial output is below if it helps). I looked for the /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/serial-getty@ttyO2.service file that you mentioned - what I found was a symbolic link at /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/serial-getty@ttyO2.service which is supposed to point to the file /lib/systemd/system/serial-getty@service, but apparently that file doesn’t exist. So maybe that is the source of the problem??

I will also try your other suggestion of just using the new kernel with the existing file system.

Thanks
Jenna

Good news, it worked when I used the new uImage and the old file system…the mac address is consistent. One more question…is there an easy way to change the mac address so it boots up the same to the mac address that I prescribe. I can do it after I boot by doing:
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 up

so that will work, but it would be nice if I could prescribe it so that I don’t have to do it everytime I boot. I also tried editing the /etc/network/interfaces file, adding hwaddress ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 under eth0, but that didn’t seem to work. I don’t necessarily have to get this working, I would just need to register the new mac address with Tufts so I can access the internet - but I already have a mac address registered for the beagleboard that I can use if I can just set it…

Thanks!
Jenna
