Also if you have an xbee USB adapter you can connect pin 1 of bone to 1 on adapter, 4 on bone to 4 on adapter and 5 on bone to 3 on adapter. That is what I use and it work great. One thing to note is that if you unplug adapter from USB and not the board it will not boot.
