BeagleBone Black won't boot after wiring up LED strip w MOSFETs and separate 12V power supply

the Bone and it was nominal (~200mA).

  Pardon... mA is NOT a voltage, it is a current.

  For GPIO pins, the voltage limit is 3.3V (analog pins are 1.8V). I
couldn't find any mention of source or sink current in the SRM, nor in the
TRM... Closest a quick perusal found in the processor spec sheet was 50mA
(no idea if source, sink, or either)

  The entire processor is supposed to use only around 500mA while
booting; so 200mA on a pin is extreme.
