Beaglebone - DVI Cape - Full Ubuntu GUI desktop

Dear All,
I have problem to get full Ubuntu GUI desktop on Beaglebone with DVI cape. The details:

  1. Myself: Newbie

  2. BeagleBone: Rev A4

  3. DVI-D Cape: Rev A

  4. OS System: Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric
I followed this link http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu to create the SD Image. I typed:

`
uname -a

`

and got this:

`
Linux omap 3.2.0-psp3 #1 Tue Feb 28 06:08:20 UTC 2012 armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux

`

  1. I connect to the monitor with HDMI to DVI cable. Please see the pictures.
I can see the console, and type (with a keyboard connected).

  2. Then I followed this command, trying to get full GUI desktop:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gdm xubuntu-desktop

  1. I reboot, hoping that it will bring me to the GUI login
But it goes to console again.

  2. Then I tried to type:

`
startxfce4

`

I got errors:

`
ubuntu@omap:~$ sudo startxfce4
[sudo] password for ubuntu:
/usr/bin/startxfce4: Starting X server

Please, help! Any update I need? Or any commands? It said something like “fail to load module fbdev”, does it mean anything to you guys?
Why does it complain “no screen found”, but these texts are actually displayed on the screen connected.

My project needs to display images, so working on console is not enough. Please help! Thanks a lot in advance!

Best regards,
David

You can try with Angstrom image. You can download from below link.

Hi David,

`

`
4. I connect to the monitor with HDMI to DVI cable. Please see the pictures.
I can see the console, and type (with a keyboard connected).

  1. Then I followed this command, trying to get full GUI desktop:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gdm xubuntu-desktop

During this phase, did you select ‘gdm’ or ‘lightdm’? lightdm, in the past with oneiric didn’t always work, hence the specific ‘gdm’ install…

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm (and then select gdm) should fix it, with a reinstall…

Just reran this on my BeagleBone with the same cape:

and here’s the Xorg.0.log:

  1. I reboot, hoping that it will bring me to the GUI login
But it goes to console again.

  2. Then I tried to type:

`
startxfce4

`

I got errors:

Regards,

Sorry, ment "with out a reinstall" here.....

Regards,

Dear Robert,
Thank you so much for help! I managed to bring up the GUI desktop with your suggestions.
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/111941781458103052840/albums/5740174401642675569/5740174401511818642

But there is still an issue: when I tried to login as “demo user”, it complained: “Could not update ICEauthority file”
Please see following picture:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/111941781458103052840/albums/5740174401642675569/5740174404058213010

Then I tried to select the “Recovery console”, and login;
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/111941781458103052840/albums/5740174401642675569/5740174407365157442

it brings me to the command prompt. I then typed:

`
sudo startxfce4

`
It seems work:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/111941781458103052840/albums/5740174401642675569/5740174425323135058

Do you have any ideas why it happened? Any solutions? I noticed that in your picture, your version has this:

`
oamp 3.2.0-psp6

`

but mine is:

`
omap 3.2.0-psp3

`

Will updating to the latest demo image (v3.2.0-psp7) help?

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,
Xinyu
