Depends.
This is what currently ships http://circuitco.com/support/files/BeagleBone-A6A/BeagleBone_Rev_A6A_Production_11_22_2012.7z and is based on 3.2 Kernel.

so will the same image for booting from microsd run on BOTH BOARDS? not that I LIKE 3.8 and device tree, but it seems to be the future and it’ll be nice to have both boards supporting the same software.

Yes, the second link i gave you is the uSD image. It will boot on both boards. That is why I sent it.
