DISTRO not found during Open Embedded installation

Hi,
I was using:
http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardAndOpenEmbeddedGit
to install OE and Bitbake. After creating the BeagleBoard
configuration and profile, when i try to run "bitbake console-image"
and get the following error :
"Please set TARGET_OS directly, or choose a MACHINE or DISTRO that
does so. DISTRO 'NONE' not found. Please set a valid dISTRO in your
local.conf"

I double-checked that my local.conf says DISTRO = "angstrom-2008.1".
How can I fix it?

Thanks,
Simran

local.conf in wrong dir?
I've seen this before but don't exactly recall the cause and what I did.
Might also be something in the script settings
Sorry.

use http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/building-angstrom instead

I tried using http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/building-angstrom
as suggested above, but i get error: Do not use Bitbake as root. So,
instead of creating OE under home directory but still get the same
error
On trying "which bitbake", it gave /home/OE/openembedded/bitbake/bin/
bitbake. Any idea how to fix it? I was trying to bitbake x11-image.

No version of bitbake will run as root.

No, its still not working. I followed the exact procedure listed at
http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/building-angstrom

except changing OETREE from /OE to /home/OE in 'source-me.txt' because
i set up my directories in /home
Another change I had to make was change permissions of 'local.conf' to
+rw in order to write MACHINE = "beagleboard". Rest, I followed
exactly the same procedure but when I bitbake x11-image, it gives me
the error:
ERROR: Openembedded's config sanity checker detected a potential
misconfiguration.
Either fix the cause of this error or at your own risk
disable the checker (see sanity.conf)
Following is the list of potential problems /advisories:
Do not use Bitbake as root.

I am completely clueless on how to fix it.
