Don't try a HDfury Connector!

Hello, this is my first post to this Mailing-Group and english is not
my native language...
I've bought a BB Rev. B6 in the end of the last year and a few day ago
I've connected a HDfury DVI to VGA to this BB. But there was no output
because the power level delivered by the "HDMI"-Connector is to low
for the HDfury-adapter (There is a blue LED in the adapter that
"shows" the signal). So I've connected an optional power supply
(regulated 5V as descripted by HDfury.com) with temporary success -
acceptable output via VGA. But after a few minutes no more output and
now the direct connected DVI-cable gives me no more picture, a BB
without screen...
I think that something is broken, a second try with HDfury shows a
green, but unacceptable output, so there is still a (low) functional
signal I think. The BB itself is beside DVI full functional and boots
without errors.
I guess it is "my fault", so no RMA... But be warned! Is it possible,
that the output of the BB is not 100% compatible (HDMI/DVI-specs)?

Regards,
Daniel

Go ahead and request an RMA. I am sure they will repair it.

When you plugged in the device to the Beagle, were either the Beagle or the device powered on?

Is the the HDFury, or HDFury II? If it’s the HDFury II, it will marry itself to the first monitor you connect it to! It was designed to remember the first DCC it sees and will only work on that monitor from then on.

Hello Glen,

I tried it first without external power, because the HDfury was
delivered without an external power supply and should normally work
with the power from the DVI/HDMI line.
I've switched the BB on after connecting all cables.

Hello Glen,

it's a HDFury (I) Blue Edition, HDMI/DVI in and VGA out, bought in
Germany (Amazon) for about 80 EUR.
The problem now is, that my BB shows no picture from the DVI-line
directly (without HDFury).

There is no powe supplied by Beagle to power the device other than a line to power the EDID circuit is provided and that is limited to around 100ma.

That my understanding as well. I just provided a little extra via a PTC.

We don’t have that much current to supply. I suppose you could short out the PTC and see what happens.

Sorry Gerald, wrong name...

This should be added to the system reference manual.
One thing is that a Converter may just not work, the other is that a
converter could potentially damage the BB...

The schematic and description of the power to the DVI-D interface is documented in the SRM. I have no plans to turn this interface into a powered peripheral and there are no plans for future revisons on the board. I will add more information in the C2 version SRM to clearly say it is not to be used to power a converter device to convert DVI-D to VGA.

Drawing more power will only heat up the PTC causing it to limit the current . No damage should be done to the board.
