GSoC Project Idea: Minix Drivers for BeagleBone Black

Dear Thomas,

Your idea seems appealing to me since I have tried Minix and know it to be a very stable OS. Although I have done a lot of device driver development on X86 platform but I havent tried MINIX device driver development. Now that you are porting it to BeagleBoard makes it even more exciting.
If you can involve me in this exciting endeavor and give me some small role, I shall be grateful to you.

If you feel you’d be suitable as a mentor, be sure to apply.

If desired I am also interested to co-mentor Thomas (e.g. together with Kees)

Minix on BB is quite exciting.

As for my skills.
I’ve mentored for beagleboard.org before
I have an educational background (as part time teacher on information technology).
Minix old timer (did 1.5 for Atari ST), although it it somewhat rusty
Proficient in I2C

Best regards,
Frans

Helllo Frans,

Kees,

Both you and Frans have been approved and I do hope we get a slot for Minix development this summer on Beagle. Is there a chance you can encourage 1 more Minix-capable mentor such that you’ll have 2 backups? That is the goal I’m trying to set. I currently have the same concern on my Bonescript project proposal where I am looking for 2 backup mentors and currently have 0.

Regards,
Jason

Kees,

Do you by any chance know someone from the minix/arm team that would be willing to co-mentor?

Jason,

Wrt the guidelines: for me G+ or irc wednesday at 16.00 (UTC+2) is not feasible.

If that is mandatory, count me out.

(If really, really needed I might be able to make it, but definitely not regularly)

On the good side: I have no holiday this summer (but could be exposed to business travel)

Enjoy, Frans.

If we really get 3 mentors per project, I’d just need one of the mentors there at the meeting time. If folks can get consensus on another meeting time, we can move it. I’m fine with later, but earlier is too much to expect from the folks on the US West coast.

Dear all,

I, from Minix/ARM am happy to co-mentor.

Great, please sign up on Melange and start a connection.

Ben, welcome aboard.

Jason, all,

Not sure if we have any far-east mentors/students but if not, I’d prefer to move to later (e.g. by 3 or 4 hours moving to europe evening and us daytime (4 pm is 7 am on the west coast so guess they won’t mind to move).
Ofc is Ben or Kees can attend 4 pm is not a problem either.

As for G+ or irc: I’m somewhat in favour of a text-only meeting. That would e.g. allow mailing the transcript to all the mentors.

Frans.
