H264 level3 decoding

Hi all,
I am looking for a HW platform capable to decode H264 level3 (720x480
– 30Im/s) baseline profile. I want it based on free SW. From what I
read on BB posts, it seems that 720p (level 3.2) is not doable without
a fine split CPU/DSP and a quite optimized H264 decoder. What about
level3 I mentioned above? Can I hope to stream it with something like
VLC+FFmpeg? Or do I have to consider TI-Gstreamer and DVSDK?

Thanks
Regis

720x480 @ 30fps is _just_ within the capabilities of the DSP, provided
your bitrate is reasonable. You'll want to use DVSDK (and TI-Gstreamer
if you are that way inclined).

  My advice would be to develop on Beagle and then get yourself an XM;
they shouldn't cost much more and will give you a bit more headroom for
difficult streams and AV sync situations.

You can try to use sbc3530 from ema, Get more information from TIs website:

you put in a faster DSP in your sbc3530?

Thanks Richard for your feedback,

I read that few posts related to DVSDK running under ANGSTROM, nothing
related to UBUNTU, Is ANGSTROM required for this kind of platform.
I heard that RAM was little bit short with UBUNTU

what is your experience on that?

  Any time

I'm afraid I don't have much experience with either Angstrom or
Ubuntu; I've tended to roll my own Linux distributions, since this
reduces the chance of cock-up.

I've not had memory problems on Beagles - you tend to lose 64Mbyte
to the DSP (though you can ratchet that down considerably if you want),
but there's still 192Mbyte lying about for you to use: my main problem's
been getting the DSP memory map right in all the right places, but I'm
guessing that someone - at least in Angstrom - will have done that for
you.

Richard.
