How to format data on SD Card partition - Ubuntu

Hi everyone,

Firstly thank you for taking the time to read this.

I want to update my version of Angstrom to the latest version. My SD
Card has 2 partitions, one is an MsDOS for the MLO & u-boot.bin files
etc and the second ext3 partition for the angstrom image.

With the MsDos Partition I was able to just delete the files via the
ubuntu GUI. This cannot be done for the ext3 partition where it flags
the errors "The folder "folder_name" cannot be handled because you
do not have permissions to read it."

I have mounted the SD card partitions with no trouble. The partition
in question is mounted at location "/mnt/sdf4".

Any advice how I can delete the files would be great. I am a newbie to
the linux way of things.

Many thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

No problem. First of all you need to figure out the device node (file in /dev/) associated with ext3 partition. You should be able to figure this out by simply executing "mount" in a terminal window. For me, it is typically /dev/sdd1..."mount" shows the following (in addition to a bunch of other stuff)...

# mount
...
/dev/sdd1 on /media/usbdisk type ext3 (rw)

If already mounted as you mention then unmount the partition as follows...

# sudo umount /dev/sdd1

Then format using mkfs...

# sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdd1

Cheers

excellent thank you Jon, it worked a treat!

Many thanks.

Hi, i am not able to find command to change no. of heads in expert
mode using fdisk in ubuntu 8.04. If you are able to do that, pls let
me know the procedure to do fdisk, copy linux image into SD card. My
SD card is mounted in /dev/mmcblk0.
