Is it safe to connect the mini USB and 5V barrel cables at the same time?

I was wondering if there is any problem with this configuration. I need to connect to the beaglebone throw USB, but I am worried as the connection also acts as a power line.

Is it safe for the board to do that? Can be done in both the original Beglebone and the Beaglebone Black?

There is no issue to connect the USB cable and the power. That is what the board was designed to do. Both the BeagleBone and BeagleBone Black have the same design.
