for the devkit8000 do I need to use a different kernel than for the
beagle? if yes, is there a repo which contains the necessary patches and
a suitable defconfig as I don't see in mainline?

Would be more better, if some user can host some thing on gitorious or
github. Please try submitting differences to Linux-omap, I can help
taking forward.
