Maximum current a cape on BBB is allowed to consume

Hi,

assumed the power supply is not the bottleneck: what is the maximum current a BBB-cape is allowed to consume on 5V rail?

Thanks in advance!

According to section 8.6 of the SRM, you can use 2A from the VDD_5V
supply (the unswitched raw DC power jack) assuming your power supply is
not a limitation. Remember the BeagleBone needs 1A to run as well, so
that means you need at least a 3A supply.

If you want the switched SYS_5V that comes up when the BeagleBone is
turned on, you are limited to 500 mA.

This won’t work for everyone, but we power our cape and let the cape power the BBB. This way the only limitations are those we design into our cape.
