newbie to beagle

Hi,
I am newbie and trying to get the hardware setup.
I don't have a COM port on my laptop, Is there a tried and tested USB
to COM port cable someone may have used already for talking to the
beagleboard ?
Thanks

It really depends on your Laptop and OS. I have not found any that will not work with the board. The issues can be with the USB drivers for the cable. I have had good luck with those based on the FTDI and Prolific chips.

I use the one from Parallax and it hasn’t failed me yet for any project, including by BB XM.

I tried two adapters (serial-to-USB )and each of them worked fine...

you should give it a try, if you don't own one try to get it, it's
cheap and reliable.

by the way, follow the instructions of the minicom they are clear &
easy:

good luck!!

I've used many different Serial to Usb dongles and I've noticed that
many of the cheaper brands have tons of glitches at high com port
rates. I highly recommend the Silicon Labs CP2102 (Evaluation Kit).
I've had no problems with it even running at 1Mps. You can grab it
from Digikey and Sparkfun.

Hi May be you have install ttyUSB0 to configure it on your laptop to use this serial to USB connector.
Try this… It worked for me too…

Thanks,

After connecting the USB to serial adaptor, see what the following
command brings up.
dmesg | tail
If your adaptor is connected properly, it will show up in the output.
