OT: Standoffs of the LCD7 cape (beaglebone): Name of the screws/threads

Hi,

I am a little dispaired...

I bought the LCD7 cape for my Beaglebone from www.tigal.com with
four standoffs.
These standoffs are screwed into for nuts (or something like that),
which are soldered/welded onto the PCB).

At the bottom of these standoffs there are wholes with the same thread
as at the nuts mounted on the PCB.

Yesterday I tried to get screws for the threads at the bottom of
the standoffs...

But no chance...it seems these threads are different from any available
(metric) screw.

To order inch based screws in the internet I need the exact
spedification of theses screws/threads.

How they are named?

Thank you very much in advance for any help!
Best regards,
mcc

Unfortunately these are not metric screws. I don't have the board
handy but I think it's 4-40. It's one of those exotic american sizes,
that nobody else in the world knows. Search through your hardware junk
box, maybe you will be able to find a few.

regards,
j.

Hi,

The hex standoffs used in the LCD7 Cape are 4-40 from Keystone. The part number is 8407. You can find this standoff on Digi-Key at following link
http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?x=6&y=13&KeyWords=8407K-ND

A datasheet for the standoff is also provided on the Digi-Key page, but you can download it directly from
http://www.keyelco.com/pdfs/M60/M60p70.pdf

There are four 4-40 PEM nuts installed at four corners of the LCD7 Cape. These are used for installing stand-offs (come default with the cape) or bracket stands (optional and can be purchased at http://boardzoo.com/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=89)

Hi Hieu,

Thank you VERY much for your detailed information.

Since I am living in Europe (germany) it not that easy for
me to get hands on screws based on inch based threads (UNC, UNF and
that alike), since everyone uses metric threads here...
They are simply two different standards...

But we will...may be a hardware store has some screws for me.

Thank you very much for the information. With these informations
it will far more easier than without

The part number for the PEM nuts are KFS-440. These are purchased from Global Fasteners. I couldn’t find the datasheet for it on their website, but there’s a similar PEM nuts here
http://catalog.pemnet.com/item/nuts-broaching-types-kf2-kfs2/broaching-nuts-types-kf2-kfs2-unified/kfs2-440

The PEM nuts and hex standoffs are also listed inside the bill of material on the BeagleBoardToys wiki for LCD7 Cape

Hi,

the screws used to attach D-SUB jacks are UNC 4-40 and
can be used as screws for the standoffs of the LCD7 cape.
I got mine from a defect motherboard....
