The BeagleBone was not designed to handle POE and I have no plans to do so in the future. POE can easily be handled with an external adapter if desired.
Gerald
No, it won't do PoE. At least not without hardware changes.
For an example of a PoE circuit, take a look at the Craneboard [1] (just
don't try to use one ;). The bit of circuits in the clear plastic box
are the PoE parts.

Thank you Gerald and Andrew. Does the Beaglebone provide USB power
over the OTG port? Does the OTG port have any limitation besides the
plug size?

The "OTG " is actually a client port. It provides no power. The DC rail connects to the TPS65217B and uses the DC as a power input.

I'm probably confusing things, but I noticed mention of a boost
converter here and I thought the Beaglebone contained no boost
converters:

That is for the LED circuitry which is not connected and only connects to the expansion header. Once you add the external circuitry to it, then you will have a boost converter on an expansion board. Until then, it is not functional.

.
Adafruit sells an adapter set for about six bucks.

It’s not using the POE spec. I am running a Beaglebone with 5 volts over a 25 foot cable with no problems.
I have no plans to enable POE on any BeagleBoard.

We have launched a BBB PoE cape here, it will be available for sale soon: https://www.n-fuse.co/devices/SBCPoE-BBB-Power-over-Ethernet-Cape-for-BeagleBone-Black.html
