PowerVR / SGX reverse engineering

During the presentation of our BeagleBoard/OMAP3 based
GTA04 device, I was asked about the 3D graphics drivers.
And why we still use the TI OMAP where it does not give a free
and open graphics accelerator clone like for the MALI GPU [1].

After doing some research, I found that FSF had announced to
work on such a clone as a high priority project [2, 3]. The page
also mentiones that the USSE opcodes/assembly language
are known.

But I could not find *any* results from this project besides
the vague wiki page and the announcement.

Is this (FSF endorsed) vapourware? Or is there something
being developed? Anyone on this list who knows some bits
about this project, even failures or abandonment?

Many thanks,
Nikolaus Schaller

That mention of the USSE reverse-engineering dates back to January 2011. Currently it is still in the "wishful thinking" state...
