I am trying to install openembedded, following the instructions given
at
http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardAndOpenEmbeddedGit.
After running the process for couple of hours, it gives me an error
message.

A quick google suggests that this is a very rare Python problem caused
by a non-core Python module. I suspect the Python guys would really
like to hear from you with details of your exact setup including all
the Python modules you have installed and the platform you are running
on.
As far as building a beagleboard image goes, all I can suggest is a
completely fresh install of Python, ideally on a different machine.
If you are using Windows you might want to consider either installing
Linux on it or using a virtual machine image.
