Slightly OT: RS232-Cape and unknown connection

Hi,

from what I can understand from the datasheet of the RS232 chip used
with the RS232-cape (the SN65C3221EPW by TI) this chip can handle any
voltage between 3.3V and 12V for the logical levels. Thats nice!

But what happens with the other side of the line? If the opposite chip
accepts (for example) 3.3V only...how can the chip of the RS232 cape
can detect this?

Thank you very much for any help in advance!

Best regards,
mcc

The output side, connector, is decoupled from the input. That is what the part is designed to do, level translate.
