Slow reverse DNS

I’m using the stock version of Angstrom that came with my BBB. Everytime I ssh into it, I get a long delay before getting the prompt. Knowing that this was probably due to some DNS configuration, I ended up changing the connman service to disable the dns proxy and I updated /etc/resolv.conf to use my DNS server directly.

Everytime I nslookup a domain name that resolves to a local IP, or if I nslookup a local IP, I get a long delay before getting the response. but if I nslookup any other public domain names (like google or yahoo), the response is almost instantaneous.

Anybody have had a similar experience? What could be causing this?

I should also note that tcpdump shows request/response going fast. there is a delay after receiving the reply from the dns server.
