sound config

I am running Ubuntu with xfce4 and have audacious compiled/installed
along with the alsa drivers and the kernel from
http://rcn-ee.net/deb/lucid/v2.6.36-rc5-dl1/ --- Thanks to Robert!

I have sound, but it is lacking quality. Does anyone have advice for
configuring the sound system?

Really? I'm the only one with sound working on Ubuntu?

have you tried adjusting the sound levels using alsamixer. lacking
quality - could mean clipping or ??

I have zero noise from the OS, there are no beeps, nothing at start-
up, etc.

If you are able to listen to an MP3 please let me know what settings
you have made, alsa mixer, whatever. There are too many switch
combinations in the alsa mixer!

I can play an mp3, but it sounds terrible. So terrible that it cannot
be used for anything.
