Ubuntu 12.04 installed on bb-xm no gui

I followed the same procedure I used on 11.10.
I started with the image from Robert Nelson from the page at elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu
I made the SD card
The boot went fine.
when I tried the gdm install step ,apt-get failed to find xubuntu-gdm-theme
I Installed the rest without the themes, no gui login upon restart.
So I tried lightdm install. I made lightdm the default when prompted.
There we no complaints but after a restart it still was a terminal session only.

I tried the omap3 image from ubuntu but it keeps reporting a failure and loops into and out of a terminal session back to the gui never finishes.

Any suggestions?

I've always had good luck with:

sudo apt-get install gdm xubuntu-desktop

and using gdm over lightdm... (specially with oneiric, but maybe
lightdm now works in precise..)

Regards,

Hi Bob,
I booted 12.04 Precise this morning.
I followed the following steps:

  1. Set the ethernet port
  2. sudo apt-get upgrade
  3. sudo apt-get install gdm xubuntu-desktop
  4. sudo apt-get install xfce4 xserver-xorg-video-omap3 network-manager

Try if it may work

If you want gui, maybe 11.10 is a better choice. GUI on 12.04 is just too slow, because no SGX video acceleration support.

I tried the 11.10 but the booting goes on and on. The desktop never comes. I refered to the same page as in elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu . But wasn’t sucessful.
Can you show me some ready openCV ready images?

colleseus

Please explain the "goes on and on" as the 11.10 image on
http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu should stop at a login prompt...

Hi,
First the screen comes which shows which peripherals have been loaded, then processes are shown followed by OK sign. Then the screen changes to load the GUI of ubuntu but that screen never appears.

First thing i'd check, are you loading gdm or lightdm? (lightdm in
oneiric, was always a problem)

Hi Robert,
I got rid of the problem. But i am not able to run music or any flash videos on the BB. Can you suggest which libraries to install?
Also I want to work on image processing, as I am new to linux and BB can you suggest which way to go?
I have been working on matlab from last year, are there easier tools available than matlab?

Regards,
Lovelesh

Hi Colleseus,
I’m having the same problem where the screen of Gui never appears. How you solve the problem?
Regards
Hugo

use mplayer or vlc? it'll be using the arm core to do the work..

Everyone seem's to be using opencv...

To directly run matlab files, not really anything good..

Hi,
I copied the SGX package on the card but it is a read only archive. How to change its permission so that it can be extracted?
