What are the major differences between the Angstrom systemd-image and console-image?

I’m trying to figure out which to use for a lightweight Angstrom console-based image (i.e. no Gnome or Cloud9 stuff). I originally assumed console-image to be the best choice, but systemd-image is provided on the Beaglebone/Demo images page and I’ve seen many blogs using that one. So what are the basic differences? Or can I found out via the OpenEmbedded system?
