xM: Boot fails. No video. Just .......60.... on serial

Naively believing the PDF documentation, I assumed I had a 4GB SD card
(it appears to be 128MB) and before doing anything else, I backed up
(rsync) the card on my brand spanking xM, and then ran through the
steps to install Ubuntu.

So I probably screwed up the card. But I restored it (rsync again).

I plugged in a HDMI-DVI cable and a 3A 5V PSU to make it work.

Still, before I modified the card, since, and no matter what I do, all
that happens when I turn the thing on is: no action on the video card,
and all I get over the serial port is:

....60....................................................

I've got a powered USB hub and a keyboard and mouse plugged in, and
they don't do anything either (eg no caps lock key light).

This seems a basic question, but if this is answered somewhere, well,
the signal:noise ratio has defeated me in searching for it.

Advice?

That happens when the bootrom can't find the mlo/u-boot on your boot
fat file system..

So what's currently in your fat partition on your sd card and which of
the wiki guides where you following. (that way it could be updated, it
sounds like it might be out of date..)

are you sure that isn't just the first partition?

file copy programs have problems with the first partition because
some of the files must be in exact locations, in my experience anyway.
using dd to copy the whole partition is pretty foolproof.

So I probably screwed up the card. But I restored it (rsync again).
