I'm trying to play some audio on my C3 BeagleBoard. Sadly, I
get nothing but noise when it runs. This same code (just 'aplay')
works fine on my other OMAP/3530 boards.
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

I used the wrong command (aplay) to play an MP3 file 
It's
working fine when I give it good data.

Have you tried following the instructions on the board validation procedure? Can you follow it and describe the behavior.
it will work fine with angstorm when i loaded audio files in teh sd
card and open with mplayer
