All Software? I think you need to stop and think about that. The reason the AM3505 is less expensive is that stuff was taken out. Stuff that has software running on it.
You are right, of course...
Bad wording from me, sorry.
What I wanted to say is that Linux
kernel and the drivers for common
peripherals should run without modifications.
Or better yet from the data sheet:
"Software Compatible with OMAP 3 Processors".
Well, not much. It won’t realy save that much from a cost standpoint. Plus, we have moved on to the AM37xx world, so one of those would make more sense that an AM3505. Doing a AM3505 would in a way be a step backward.
Depending on the family member you may gain SGX acceleration, an ethernet mac or a video input port but 35x or 37x
you lose big time on the loss of the DSP and NEON subsystems.

Really ? On my AM3505 datasheet it shows the NEON subsystem, but not
the
DSP. The TI Sitara videos show video playing on the AM3517 as well as
some
fancy 2D and 3D graphics - it's my understanding that the SGX
coprocessor
is what's required for the graphics but the video playing only
requires the
NEON ?
Sorry, the NEON is on both, SGX is only on the 3517.
Yes, SGX is the graphics accelerator and NEON for video.
It would be interesting to see a performance comparison for A/V decode
between the OMAP NEON + DSP vs the Sitara NEON only.

It would be interesting - we're considering the AM3505 for a low-cost
multimedia player. One of the nice features is a BGA package option,
VCA, that facilitates routing on a 4-layer board. While the chip is
currently in-stock, a lot of the supporting circuitry has 1/2 year
leadtimes.
