With my images it is not enabled by default.. You need to add
"buddy=spidev" to the top of uEnv.txt (in the boot partition) to tell
the kernel to enable those spi pins..

Just ignore the older ubuntu demo image and the kernel patches, as
this is now already taken care of via "buddy=spidev"..
