I’m having problems getting the BeagleBone to complete the processes
needed to fully come up and run. My PC environment is Windows XP. I
am connecting to the board through the USB cable included in the kit.
I do not have a wired Ethernet network to connect to. From the
README.htm file I have been able to:
1. Install the BONE_DRV.exe on Windows.
2. I can connect the BeagleBone’s serial console with Hyperterminal
3. I am able to logon as root
The problem comes when I need to launch the USB-to-Ethernet
interface. The BeagleBone storage gadget shows up as “USB Mass
Storage Device” on Windows. I stop that driver, but the “USB-to-
Ethernet” interface does not automatically start. I do note that the
C:\Windows\system32\DRVSTORE\linux_ and ftdibus_ directories exist.
I’m not quite sure what I am doing wrong so I can’t get to the next
step and get the USB-to-Ethernet gadget running so I can go the web
interface. Any suggestions?
Also, does a direct Ethernet connection to the board make sense?
Which type of ethernet cable should I use? Thanks.

Yes, it'll work, but you'll need to define an IP address and
appropriate settings for each side if your PC doesn't provide a DHCP
server.
Or, perhaps you just mean connecting it to your existing Ethernet
network, in which case, it should fetch an address via DHCP and work
fine.
Which type of ethernet cable should I use? Thanks.
Either a normal cable or a cross-over cable should work. The hardware
is meant to have an auto-detect feature to cross-over when necessary.
I've tried using both types of cables.
Thanks for the response. I don't have a wired network to plug into.
It would take a wireless connection for it to get a DHCP address. My
connection would need to be a direct one. I've tried using a normal
ethernet cable, but since I don't know how to assign an IP address to
the board, it made no connection - as expected. Can you point me to
instructions on how to do this? My more fundamental issue (forgetting
the ethernet connection) is how to get the USB-to-Ethernet gadget
running so I can talk to the BB and get to its web site. Any
suggestions? The current situation leaves me with an unusable BB.
Thanks.
Another source suggested I go to Windows Explorer and eject the
BeagleBone from there. This made all the difference. I had been
using the icon in the system tray to stop the BeagleBone USB
connection. This is NOT the same as an eject. When I did this eject,
the new drivers were installed. I could then access the BeagleBone
101 presentation and the Cloud9 IDE. I was also able to run the
"blinkled" application. I do find that I can't access GateOne. I get
an error message saying this webpage has a redirect loop that resulted
in too many redirects. Any thoughts on what is wrong here? Running
ifconfig -a yields:
I've been able to use Putty. Thanks for the recommendation. However,
I'm still unable to access GateOne. I am using Chrome on Windows XP.
It thinks there are too many redirects. Any other thoughts?
I’m using Windows 7, with Putty, but when I try to connect over Google Chrome I get 103 error connection… With Ubuntu and Usb-to-Ethernet I didn’t have any problem!!
again… I tried to connect via Android Phone, Ubuntu and I didn’t get any kind of error… But When I try to connect with Windows 7 I cannot retrieve page with some errors like:
Errore 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server had close the connection without send datas.
