BeagleY-AI adding overlays when using NVMe hangs boot

Adding an overlay when using SD card is fine.

Adding an overlay when using NVMe hangs the boot. Not sure how far along it goes because the networking does not come up either so I cannot ssh into it. The debug port connector is different on this board than the ai64 so I will have to wait until it arrives to see what is going on. Also the kernel messages are not being output to the screen.

Testing in a bit, which overlay did you try to load?

Imx219, spi, i2c.
What might have happened is the video died on it.
Sequence of events.

  1. Green and pink monitor
  2. Next time it was fired up, works fine.
  3. Overlays loaded when on SD

Some point I installed a fresh image before NVMe setup

  1. Removed some packages like node-red, nginx
  2. Set it up for NVMe, that worked perfect.
  3. Added 3 overalys and it hung up, assumed fat fingers.
  4. Removed one at time, no boot
  5. Removed all of them, no boot.
  6. Did notice the heartbeat (green) is running so the kernel has to be up.

Not sure what to think at this point, did an RMA on it.

I will power it back up and see if hdmi comes up with the new image. Are you going to build a new image, I used the one in beagle imager.

Just loaded it up on the new image. Screen is still dead, green heartbeat went on then turned solid red then its back to green heartbeat. Drawing 96 mA. so something is running. The other board should arrive and I will use this current SD and see what happens.

Update. It just booted with video, this is on the new image. I was wiggling the connector on the board…

Got the debug port up, looks like board sn/209 has an issue with the SD. The other board arrived today and it is working fine. SD boots fine in sn/497, swapped sd cards several time each time 497 would boot. 209 was having trouble with reading sd card. Here is output.

Then after a while this one shows up.

 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

that’s some of the same issues we’ve seen on the Play and AI64, some microSD cards just don’t work… What model and brand? @virtualRadish

That is odd, been using these for several years and they have booted all BB products, Khadas, NXP, Pi without any problems.

Even went so far as to overwrite all of it, assumed it might have a hole somewhere and that did not help.

What brand/cap do you recommend?

A guess, maybe its related to the clock drifting?? Not sure how they generate the master clock, the old days we had a crystal for the osc.

A few times it did boot okay, must be something on the limits. Since the first boot it was a pink and green screen it could be linked to timing. The next day it was fine, the screenshot was in correct color.

Just had another 20 of these delivered…

But I go thru so many flash-reflash-flash cycles on a normal day. At some point I get I/o errors on my USB adapter, I just throw it out and open a new one… plus all the boards running 24/7 and me adding more boards to CI…

All of them verify as correct after the image is laid down. Are you letting them verify after the burning process?

I will order some of the ones you are using and see what happens.

No, if you flash a microSD a few hundred times, at some point the controller just gives up!
