Could not boot from sd card

Hello everyone!

I’m flashing a few BeagleBone Blacks, but I’m having an issue with one of them:

It doesn’t boot from the SD card, and therefore doesn’t flash the eMMC. Without the SD card, it boots normally.

The SD card was created on another BeagleBone, and it works fine with other devices.

Here’s the log:

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/mmcblk0p1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
(initramfs)

might be a compatibility between u-boot in emmc and the OS on the sdcard
try holding the ‘user’ button during boot with the sdcard.

unfortunately no success. I´m able to connect via putty and USB IP 192.168.7.2

I upgrade the OS on the emmc, clear many logs (df show zero space available)

But still boot from emmc(?):

with pressed boot button:

is there maybe another way to flash the eMMC? From USB or maybe live?

from your first boot log

from your second boot log

U-Boot 2022.04-gbaca7b46 (Jan 15 2024 - 19:59:28 +0000)

correct me if i’m wrong, the first boot log is from the sdcard boot (on a working BBB) and the second boot log is from the emmc ??
maybe @RobertCNelson can provide soom input
i still think the emmc u-boot is to old to work with 5.10 linux kernel
at risk of bricking the BBB if the sdcard does not work, you could boot from emmc and then dd zero’s to the emmc. then it should boot from the sdcard

another question: is there other hardware attached to the BBB ??

Hello!

i didn´t notice the different line at the beginning. He always boot from eMMC, because the os on sd card is complete different.

When I start without press boot button, I get U-Boot 2019
When I start with pressing boot button, I get U-Boot 2022

Attached again with holding the boot button:

Hello!

maybe you have a complete dd command for me?

no, there is no other hardware connected. I boot with USB Power up

first do a lsblk, this will show the mmcblkx devices available
example of my BBB
mmcblk1 179:0 0 3.6G 0 disk
mmcblk1boot0 179:256 0 4M 1 disk
mmcblk1boot1 179:512 0 4M 1 disk
mmcblk0 179:768 0 14.5G 0 disk
└─mmcblk0p1 179:769 0 14.5G 0 part /
mmcblk0 is sdcard (notice the ‘/’ that is the rootfs mount)
mmcblk1 is emmc
to delete the u-boot in emmc (i.e. the partition table)
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcblk1 bs=1M count=2

so holding the S2 button during boot, did have it boot from sdcard, based on the logs you have posted.

i also noticed in the

U-Boot SPL 2019.04-00002-g31a8ae0206

log,
you have
init=/usr/sbin/init-beagle-flasher
not sure why
i haven’t used a flasher image lately, but i thought it was another line in the uEnv.txt file that ya uncomment.

debug: [console=ttyS0,115200n8 bone_capemgr.uboot_capemgr_enabled=1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p1 ro rootfstype=ext4 rootwait init=/usr/sbin/init-beagle-flasher]

take a look at the uEnv.txt file on the sdcard, there should be a line you uncomment to get it to flash the emmc.

Thank you, now he did not booting in debian OS from sd card anymore.
Without sd-card just see CCCCCC writing in console
With sd-card (no matter if button pressed or not) I get this log now:

some progress, next
i’ve seen this type of failure log recently on this forum, not sure what the resolution was.

are you using a downloaded image from beagleboard site??
how are you writing this image to the sdcard??
if not using balenaEthcher for writing image to sdcard, can you try to use it, they have downloads for both windows and linux

I usually just break uboot. Need to connect to debug port and stop uboot and just erase some of emmc. Then boot with the IoT image that installs its self, it will laydown a uboot that is configured for the IoT image.

he already wiped the emmc,
my thinking is that how he’s installing the image on the sdcard is the issue.

I know that IoT image works, seems like it has a newer version uboot. It would help of OP would post the link to the exact image they are using.

Hello!

Many thanks to your help.

I flash month ago a beaglebone (Can´t remember the used images file). Configure the BBB and then copy the eMMC to the sd-card.

Then I write the sd-card with win32DiskImager to a file and write back to 4 other sd-card`s

I flashed 30 BBB without problems (with the 5 sd-card`s at same time).
Only this one has the problem.

Maybe the installed OS is different to all other 29 BBB.

Right now I can only boot from the sd-card (no matter from which of the 5 pieces. All are same)

In the console I can read the version:

=> version
U-Boot 2022.04-gbaca7b46 (Jan 15 2024 - 19:59:28 +0000)

arm-linux-gnueabihf-gcc (Debian 10.2.1-6) 10.2.1 20210110
GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.35.2

Should I flash a new sd-card? Which image you suggest?

Thanks

EDIT: I download now this image to sd-card:
BBB-blank-debian-9.5-iot-armhf-2018-10-07-4gb.img

With this is now flashing.

I wait until finished, but what then?
Should I try again to flash my own sd-card or need I prepare the eMMC for a correct version?
