- What the likelihood of the hardware being updated to use the new dual core Cortex A9 processor instead? - Also is it possible to run a 'full fat' GNU based (ARM compatible) OS on this board and run it as a stand alone PC?

unlikely, there is the Pandaboard already.

You can put an OS as fat as you like, nevertheless some people have found running e.g. a "full" Ubuntu as a bit too much for the Beagle...
