i'm trying to catch up on my BB experimenting, and i just perused
the thread here:
http://groups.google.com/group/beagleboard/browse_thread/thread/3c9d18cd80880786?pli=1
apparently, UPS will be delivering my -xM tomorrow and i would very
much like to get ubuntu up and running on it ASAP as i have a project
i'd like to demo as proof of concept over the weekend.
so ... what is the current status? is there an image of 10.04
that's ready to go? and, ideally, i'd like to be able to build my own
(pre-release) 10.10 version as well. thanks.

For Lucid (10.04) You should be able to use the demo image, but not the netinstall image:
http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu#Demo_Image
or straight here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.04/release/
Ubuntu Maverick (10.10) beta should be up on Thursday for the xM - see other message thread on this list with subject “Ubuntu install on BeagleBoard-xM”. Quoting Ricardo from that thread:
You’ll be able to get the image at
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/ports/releases/maverick/ . See
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Install/ARM/PreinstalledImage if you need
instructions on how to set up your sd card (quite simple, just a dd, put the
card and boot).
(Kudos to you guys for working so hard on this stuff, ubuntu on the beagle is a serious head-turner)
The Maverick pre-installed Beta release should work fine at your xM,
besides the possible x-loader incompatibility if you have a xM with
Numonyx memory chip
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/x-loader/+bug/628243)
There are still some issues around, but it should be good to try it.
If you want to build your own version, you could use Rootstock, like
Robert Nelson does for his own images.
Cheers,
And now for some more bad news..
If you do use rootstock, make sure to fill in the login and passwd
options.. as I found in my day before beta release has found,
oem-config is broken (creating the first user that is..)..
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/628587
So my demo images will be a little late.. But both current Demo
images listed will boot fine on the xM and the Alpha-3 is only a "sudo
aptitude update && sudo aptitude -y safe-upgrade" away from what this
image would have had..
Regards,
so the images here:
http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu#Demo_Image
are xm-ready? i ask only because, partway thru that section, the
install instructions are given for (and i quote):
"Quick Install script for Beagle Bx, C2/C3/C4"
which clearly doesn't mention the xm but i won't read too much into
that, then.
