DM3730 eval kits as alternatives to beagle xm?

a client of mine wants to develop a product based on what they said
was the OMAP3530 and told me they planned to work with the beagle XM
for the initial development, so i'm assuming they meant the DM3730
(minor difference).

they asked me for advice in terms of other eval kits that might also
be suitable, so i started looking around, but the alternatives i've
run across so far have been crazy expensive -- there's the logicpd
zoom DM3730:

for almost $1000, which is way outside the acceptable price range.

so while the beagle XM will certainly work fine, i'm curious if
anyone can recommend other processor-equivalent dev kits that are
newer with more features in that same general price range, for
comparison purposes. thanks.

Hi Robert,

If price of the devkit is important to your client, then I’m assuming the number of final units to be produced is relatively small?

If so, I would recommend the Gumstix Overo. It is a DM3730 module, very similar to the beagleboard xm (but much smaller), and which is suitable for building into products if the runs are limited. My company has built several custom products which have an Overo inside them. Anything you can do with the XM, you can do with the Overo, and the knowledge from one carries over to the other.

Before you venture into using the DM3730, there are a few things you
should consider. Is your customer going to use the DSP? If not, then the
BBB is essentially the same without the DSP. If they need the DSP, what
are they going to use for IPC between the DSP and Linux? SYSLINK doesn¹t
work on the 3.x kernels and RPMSG isn¹t supported on the OMAP3. If they
want DSP, consider OMAP4 or OMAP5. These boards are a little more
expensive, but somewhere between $150 and $300.
