Feature request: PoE

This is purely a feature request for the team at BeagleBoard.org.
I would really love for the Beaglebone Black to be powered via PoE for the obvious reasons.

$5.95

Regards,

Feature request received. But no room on the board for this feature. It will not fit.

Sounds like maybe someone could make a little money designing a cape . . .

And when I say “a little” I would imagine there is not much of a market for such a cape.

Yeah, that price leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks for the feedback.
I can see what you mean about the board not having enough space, the PoE cape is pretty beefy! The price isn’t all that cheap either, but may be cheaper than running a power cable to the desired location. Trouble for me it’s in Dollars, I will have to add UK import duty onto the price.

I looked at this in great detail back when I designed the board. Based on price and the fact it had to fit in an Altoid box, it just wasn’t going to work.

It was also the right decision... over the life of this forum, only 17
topics related to POE:

i think i spam more topics in the average week..

Regards,

That price for the cape is definitely too high. I would imagine a similar cape could be made for half that price or less. All the stuff that cape has on it is not needed either. But, I bet since Gerald has already looked into it he’d have a fairly decent idea of what such a cape should cost.

Regards,

I would imagine most people would rather not spend the extra cost of PoE if they could avoid it. Even if somehow Gerald miraculously got the price down to ~$6 like the cost of that dongle you posted a link to Robert . . . Usually, PoE items cost a lot more, which has me thinking that dongle is somehow suspect . . .

The dongle on adaifruit requires you to provide the 5volt dc power supply..
It's just a passive adapter..

but it got my thinking about the spagetti mess of 7 bbb's i have in the
corner for 24/7 testing.

Regards,

OK, so I’m not an EE, even though I do have a lot of experience with many form of electronics, and definitely some with PoE too . . . But I’d think that it should not be unheard of to get the price of a PoE cape down to under $20USD. That would be useful to some I’m sure.

Ah ok, yeah I did not realize it was only a power injector. I assumed it was somehow stepping down 48VDC to 5V. So for your spaghetti mess, why not get, or design a “power rail” like some do in data with many rack system, but instead of 12, 5, and 3.3, just do 5 volts

The cape for $69 is not PoE compliant because PoE standard requires 48VDC and not 24 or less

There’s a third-party looking into doing this, but it will be a larger board. Look for updates in a couple months. Let us know if you have any particular demand.

Whoever decides to build a POE cape should make a way for the Bone to be
reset from the cape.
Since there is a chance that the bone will not recover from some failed
code execution per past threads.
Its almost mandatory that that "feature" needs to be included.

This could be done fairly easily with a single msp430(g2553), but it would also require additional circuitry, and at minimum a button battery.
