Flashed wrong image, won't flash anymore

Hello,

Trying again before I call that board completely bricked. I didn’t think that was even possible! I believe I flashed an image not for the BBAI-64 and now it won’t boot or flash anymore.

It gets power from a 5V benchtop supply.

I power up with the SD card inserted and BOOT pressed (or RESET+BOOT then release RESET, it doesn’t seem to make a difference). It goes through the beginning of the boot sequence then continuously restarts with no error message (no “mmc1: error - 110” that others have reported).

I have tried other SD cards but no success.

I downloaded the 11.7 image from: https://rcn-ee.com/rootfs/release/2023-08-05/bullseye-xfce-arm64/bbai64-emmc-flasher-debian-11.7-xfce-arm64-2023-08-05-10gb.img.xz

log when trying to boot directly (wrong board reported):
boot_loop_20230827_direct.txt (50.2 KB)

log when trying to flash the downloaded image (correct board reported):
boot_loop_20230827_SD.txt (8.1 KB)

Thanks for the help!

At line 196 you are prompted for a number then hit enter, did you do that?

Your device is not bricked.

Well, it also asks at line 48 (I stopped the text file at 196 but it continues indefinitely…). I have no way of entering a number (console doesn’t respond, usb keyboard doesn’t respond) so after a couple of seconds it proceeds with the default: “2: Linux microSD (default)”. That’s what I would have picked anyway so I didn’t think much of it.

The full loop is from line 1 to 75. After that it’s all a repeat. It goes on forever if I don’t stop it.

Looks like the kernel is trying to start.
Since it stops about the same place it might be corrupt data on the SD card.

The flasher image takes a long time to load and will have some flashing lights until is is done.

Might try to overwrite all the contents on the SD and reburn it. I always use the PI imager, go into custom and select the image. PI Imager will also verify after the transfer, just cannot do that with DD.

We just used that same image within the last couple of weeks and it installed fine for us.

Are you able to hit the space bar to go into uboot?

Ok, I’ll try PI imager. I already tried another SD card but it’s worth a shot! I’ll report tonight…

I can’t do anything with the keyboard during the startup so no, I haven’t been able to hit the spacebar.

Thanks!

Hi @Xtof just grab the latest flasher: https://forum.beagleboard.org/tag/latest-images

After powering the board, remember to hold down both the reset and usr button, then let off the reset button, and the bootrom will load from microsd…

Let the flasher run, and it’l update the eMMC version of u-boot…

Regards,

Hi @foxsquirrel , @RobertCNelson ,

I downloaded the latest image ARM64 - Debian 12.x (Bookworm) - Monthly Snapshots - 2023-08-05 and used PI imager for the SD card. Held RESET and BOOT, then released RESET.

It still doesn’t flash and goes through the same loop as before.

However, I figured out the keystroke issue (wrong flow control setting in PuTTY) so I can hit spacebar and go into uboot. But that’s not a terminal I’m used to, so I’m reading up on it. Here’s the log with a few commands I tried while poking around:

At this point I’m a bit over my head. Is that pca953x error significant? Is the eMMC partition type 0c DOS correct or should it be 83 for Linux bootable?

Anyway, I have some reading to do… please let me know if you can point me to a good resource, tutorial or if you have a step by step!

Thank you for getting me this far, I really appreciate the help!

This shows us the board was now correctly detected… Just let the ‘flasher’ write u-boot to the eMMC…

For this next “monthly” snapshot, (on this saturday), extlinux will now show 3 options on bootup…

BeagleBone AI-64 Recovery
BeagleBone AI-64 eMMC Flasher
BeagleBone AI-64 Linux microSD (default)

So from u-boot, menu you can select 1, 2, or 3 (default)… bb-u-boot-beagleboneai64/suite/bullseye/debian/microsd-extlinux.conf · main · BeagleBoard.org / repos-arm64 · GitLab

Regards,

Hello,

Sadly, the new version is still not flashing :frowning:

There are indeed three options, but the eMMC flasher was already in the previous lrelease, wasn’t it ( root=/dev/mmcblk1p2 ro rootfstype=ext4 rootwait net.ifnames=0 init=/usr/sbin/init-beagle-flasher)

When I choose option 2 to flash, it stops partway in the boot sequence and doesn’t look like it even gets to the flasher:

The boot sequence always seems to crash around USB / xhci, not always the exact same spot but close.

Back to reading about uboot and how to flash from there (assuming thats possible?)

Thank you!

I wonder, how are you powering the board? My default go to is using Raspberry USB type-c adapters… Do you have anything else plugged in?

Regards,

RPi USB type C adapter to the rescue! That worked.

I was using a 5V / 6A benchtop power supply connected through the barrel jack so I can use the usb-c for other purposes. I didn’t expect that would be the issue. I guess I need to rethink the power.

Thank you for all the help !
