GPIO identification

Hello,

Recently I have started working with BBB. I have one doubt that how the controller understands the following:
Suppose I have to make the pin 12 of connector P8 high, than I have to include gpio44 into the gpio library. Why 44 ? How does this get defined …? I struggled with Pin 14 of connector 8. Some literatures suggest that it is GPIO 40 but later on in groups I found that it is GPIO 50 and it worked. In schematic and SRM it is mentioned as GPIO1_18 and like that. Please help.

Regards,
Anup
