Help upgrading BeagleBone Debian, mmcblk0p1 does not exist

I’ve inherited a SOC board based on the BeagleBone Black design. I’m able to flash and run from SD cards and the current image is using Debian Stretch. I’m attempting to use the distro from AM335x 11.7 2023-09-02 4GB eMMC Xfce Flasher - BeagleBoard to upgrade to Debian Bullseye. I downloaded the .xy file, extracted it to .img and flashed the SD Card using Balena (I’ve used this approach many times and not had an issue). When attempting to run from SD card it appears that it has issues with finding /dev/mmcblk0p1 though this isn’t an issue with the other SD cards I have that have an earlier version of Debian on them. The following is the output:
Board: BeagleBone Black

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:

  • Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
    • Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
  • Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/mmcblk0p1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

I had this problem once upon a time with TI.com builds for poky…

I was not able to function with it either. It would not allow for updating to newer images. Of course, I was using the BBAI-64 for building…

  1. Are you using your own image or another image from their company?
  2. Have you tried building your own image?
  3. If you are using a TI image with poky, busybox, and/or buildroot, try to reach out to their company (the company of mfg) for proper image builds.

Seth

P.S. I think using the BBB is neat but can be troublesome from other mfg. that are not part of beagleboard.org.

Hi Seth,

Thanks for taking time to reply. I believe the image I’m trying to upgrade was built in house, the engineer who was responsible wasn’t great at documentation (as is the custom lol). I’ve inherited the project, which are boards that were built from bbb schematics w/slight modifications, hw has been used in production and I don’t believe there are issues with it. The image I’m trying to upgrade to was pulled from the bbb site. I’m not very versed in this environment so it is possible that the image currently running on those boards cannot be upgraded. To that end I tried using a board that doesn’t have anything running on it yet, i.e. it just prints out CCCCC… on the serial port when powered on and no SD card was present. I then took the image I downloaded from AM335x 11.7 2023-09-02 4GB eMMC Xfce Flasher - BeagleBoard and used Balena to flash image to SD card and the following occurs on boot-up.

I tried copying the image using dd instead of Balena thinking maybe there is an issue with the way the SD card is formatted but it yields the same results. I’m still ramping up on this environment so I may be missing steps. I have been able to copy production images we have using Balena and they run on a “new” boards without issue so I’m a bit confused as to why it kind find the partition as in both instance running lsblk shows they are mmcblk0->mmcblk0p1 and both show with rootfs with appropriate folder/files when mounted on Ubuntu.

So all the information is available…I tried a known good .img of ours on a fresh board and the boot results are markedly different, they are as follows:

One obvious difference early in the boot process is Loading Environment from EXT4… OK, that does not occur on the .img in question, makes me wonder if there’s something in U-boot that is different. I could follow the instructions here at Debian: Getting Started with the BeagleBone Black - Linux Guides - DigiKey TechForum - An Electronic Component and Engineering Solution Forum for building an image from the ground up, but I wonder how that would be any different than the .img I downloaded from bbb, seems they would have used similar steps to produce those, kind of at a lose on how to proceed as it seems its likely some kind of compatibility/configuration issue but I don’t know where to begin to find it and if it’s in the build process (i.e a setting/configuration in either uBoot/Kernel/OS etc) I wouldn’t know what to change so it seems likely that I would be right back in this same position.

compare your uEnv.txt files, your custom image and that of your download image.
custom builds are very hard to debug with limited info.
Also, look at any u-boot changes that were made on your custom build. (if any)
i.e. did the custom board need any emmc or ram timing changes ??

Thanks for the information and I agree, I’m quickly becoming acutely aware of the difficulty of debugging a custom image vs. a bbb one. I’m under the impression that a custom board requires the compilation of a TI provided kernel w/some additional configuration (though I’m not sure how/where I go about this), for example I believe there is a custom string that is written out the i2c on boot to a device-id chip (this may be an EEPROM read/write??) and while I don’t see any differences between the uEnv.txt in either bbb or custom .img I do see quit a few differences to things like the addition of /sys/opt/scripts etc. that I think are result of a TI kernel build that is (or at least it’s my impression that it is) required for custom builds. It’s going to take some work to uncover the path forward but I guess the next steps are to begin the build process anew, starting with the MLO and u-boot and then the kernel and then the OS any insight or lessons learned in the custom build process would be greatly appreciated.
