I used to subscribe to the google group, but you are discontinuing that, so I am forced to use this. But in the preferences I can only find an option to send me a digest of messages rather than getting the messages individually. This makes following a thread in my email folder impossible. So please can you tell me how to configure for individual emails.
@David.Goodenough - You’re looking for the “Watch” feature. It can be applied to individual topics or to whole categories. The options are in the little “Bell” icon that appears throughout the interface: 
There are a few options in there. You’ll probably want either “Watching” or “Watching First Post”
The “Tracking” option isn’t nearly as interesting as it sounds, so I’d recommend using one of the others.
The “Watch” features are available at the topic level, too, so you can selectively make adjustments at that level, too, if you’d like.
