How to start X11 / gnome?

A Linux newbie here.

My BBB does not log into X11. Instead, it logs into terminal.
So I logged in as root and gave command ‘systemctl start gdm’. However I’m getting message as no such file found.

Please help me to solve the issue!

P.S. I have updated the latest Angstrom image.

Are you sure you download the good Angstrom package ? Normally the Gnome interface should start.

Did you take this file: https://s3.amazonaws.com/angstrom/demo/beaglebone/BBB-eMMC-flasher-2013.09.04.img.xz ?

I believe you can start GNOME by typing in

gnome-session

I’m not quite sure because I normally go into my BBB through the LAN, and then I ssh -X and do the gnome-session command.

As to starting the BBB with gdm, I think you may have to edit /etc/ttys but then I normally use FreeBSD so I can’t be too sure. And in any case, I’ll echo lazarman’s suggestion that you ask about that in the Linux newbie group
