how to temporary disable all not really needed things?

i tried to compile GitHub - OpenLightingProject/ola: The Open Lighting Architecture - The Travel Adaptor for the Lighting Industry · GitHub on the pocketbeagle2.
but that takes a very huge amount of time -
more than 3h. (i now stopped it.)
i think i saw multiple memory pressure warnings in the logs -
so maybe the compile is soo slow because maybe i have a slow sd-card and the memory is full with other things?

so what is the easiest way to

  • test the real SD-Card speed
  • temporary disable all the non-crusical things to free up memory?
    • the vscode server thing for example..

any hints are welcome

sunny greetings
stefan

PB2 (512MB) and (industrial 1GB) is really limited on memory… Even with zram/swap enabled… Best to build it on another device..

Regards,

thanks RobertCNelson for your reply!

yeah if i think more about it that makes sense -
i did this back 11years ago for an acme board..

so the way is to setup the cross-compiler then..

can i use the ready made image as a starting point somehow?
(PocketBeagle 2 Debian 13.6 2026-07-24 IoT (v6.18.x-k3) - BeagleBoard)

are there any PB2 specific tutorials for this out there some one here knows off / has tested?

sunny greetings stefan

Reminds me of compiling gcc on my armv5, that took a couple weeks to compiling! What you can do to speed things up is use a virtual machine, like qemu. Then you can keep the beagle enviroment, but have the speed of the host processor, especially if it simulates direct in the kernel.

Pocketbeagle2 is in meta-ti, a yocto image is the best way to go. Only install what you need, if you are working in python just install pip in the yocto image so you can load stuff you might have not included in the first build.

thanks for all your hints!

for now i will stick to the fastest way i found  : use the version contained in the official-package-repos..
no more optimizing at that point in time.
later i will try the optimized image..
