The Windows connection was much too flakey so I installed Ubuntu.
When I plug in the pocketbeagle 2, an interface shows up but ifconfig only shows
an IPv6 address for it, no 192.168.7.1 at all. The settings for IPv4 are “automatic DHCP”,
automatic DNS, automatic routes. IPv6 settings look the same.
Why no ipv4 address?
ssh to 192.168.7.2 just sits there, no connect,
ping 192.168.7.1 gets 100% packet loss.
I’d first separate the IPv4 DHCP question from the link itself: check that the Ethernet link is up, then inspect ip -4 addr and networkctl status (or nmcli device) for the interface. If there is no DHCP lease, compare the router’s lease table and try a different cable or switch port. If the board gets an IPv6 address but never an IPv4 one, checking the interface’s DHCP/Netplan configuration and the router’s DHCP logs should show whether the request is leaving the board or being rejected. A direct test with a static IPv4 address can also confirm whether the problem is DHCP rather than the physical link.
Lots of great suggestions! I got the debug probe connected and found
that “I just wasn’t waiting long enough”.
I will post the console log from that session in case you want to look through
it, it’s on another machine I can’t reach at the moment. The U-boot menu came
up at least three times while I watched.
Then the login prompt came and stayed. I logged in, and then was able to
ssh “as normal” from the host.
There apparently is an issue about boot stability in this configuration, but once
it boots OK it seems to keep going. More than 12 hours so far…
Sadly I did not use the right “log it” argument (-L) to screen - the log was lost.
