No GUI in Ubuntu images from http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu?

I'm probably just omitting something obvious but I can load and launch
the pre-built image in ubuntu-lucid-alpha2-minimal-armel.tar.7z on my
beagleboard C2 just fine. But all I get on my monitor us a command
prompt- no desktop. I've tried "startx" etc. to no avail.

What am I doing wrong?

Your not doing anything wrong... 'minimal' means minimal, for future
uploads i'm planning to included a basic xfce4 image...

sudo apt-get install xfce4 gdm xubuntu-gdm-theme xubuntu-artwork

will get you what you want..

you can install desktop Env using apt-get .
