On my xM rev B with the preinstalled canonical Ubuntu Maverick, I was able to use apt-get to install mplayer, mencoder, and obexftp.
On my xM rev C with the preinstalled canonical Ubuntu Natty, trying to install with apt-get returns "no installation candidate" for mplayer and obexftp and "unable to locate package" for mencoder.
To use these programs, are my only options to compile them myself or use a different distribution such as Angstrom or Robert Nelson's Demo Ubuntu? (Rober Nelson's Ubuntu is excellent; I'm just trying to figure out why the programs are unavailable in the canonical distribution.)
Why are the files missing when the older edition had them available?

Double check that you have "universe" enabled in /etc/apt/sources.list

Perhaps /tec/apt/sources.list is not set up properly to look for them.
I just did "apt-cache search" on each of them and they are there.
# aptitude install mencoder
