Problem updating kernel – ended up in corrupted state, can't boot

Hello!

I am new to BeagleBone, so please forgive me if some of these issues/questions are obvious and/or explained elsewhere.

I have BeagleBone Black Rev C (Debian) which I purchased from Adafruit in June. I love it!

However, I was unable to use a mouse connected via USB – it seemed like USB port simply was not providing any power. Simple USB mouse would work with my Mac, but not with BeagleBone.

So I tried updating the kernel… It looks like somehow it ran out of space, and yet recommended that I reboot. Which I stupidly did :frowning: And now I can’t boot at all, I am getting this error:

RAMDISK: EOF while reading comporessed data
uncompression error

If anyone has a suggestion on how to bring my BeagleBone Black back to life, I would much appreciate it.

Here is what /opt/script/tools/update_kernel.sh resulted in.

Very odd, it looks like it ran out of space while updating..

I'd re-flash with the latest lxde flasher image:

http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#2014-07-22

One of the big changes, we moved the kernel vmlinuz/initrd.img/dtbs
that are used for booting out of the small fat partition and onto the
rootfs. So now there's plenty of room for kernel upgrades and what
happened to you should never happen again.

It's mostly been cape updates, so i don't think it'll improve support
for your mouse in the v3.8.x kernel. When plugged in, do you get
anything from: lsusb?
