Question about BB SD Setup.

Hi all,

I am a newbie in the Embedded Linux field and i bought a BB and i need
to start development on it as soon as i can.

I have already got the needed tools and the needed sw from the
Shopping List page (http://code.google.com/p/beagleboard/wiki/
BeagleBoardShoppingList) and i communicated with the BB successfully.

The issue i am facing currently is that i can't prepare the SD card
with the Angstrom kernel to start development. I have a Sony VAIO
VPCCW26FA Laptop with Windows7 and VMware running Ubuntu_8.04. I can't
mount the SD card on the Linux. I tried to use Ubuntu and OpenSUSE on
VMware but this didn't work. I also tried to use the Ubuntu live CD
but it didn't work either.

Is there anyway i can setup the SD card on Windows ? - and what are
the needed IDE for development ? - Is CodeSourcery and Eclipse are
enough for the moment ?

If anyone have a quick guide for how to start development for the BB
quickly, i would be very grateful. But i need a very fast answer to my
first question regarding the SD card setup.

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance.

Hi!

I also have VMware (Workstation 7.0.0) and Ubuntu 9.10 on it.

I think the solution is: I presume that you have SD-reader embedded in VAIO, otherwise you would mount SD like 1-2-3. So, if you look at VM window (not full screen mode) then you can see a number of icons in the down-right corner. So, find the one displaying SD-reader, click on it and choose “Disconnect from host”. I believe everything will be OK

Hi Maxim,

I already tried this and it didn't work. I will try to do what you say
with the distribution you use (9.10) it may be different. I am
downloading it now and i will try it.

Can you tell me what IDE or compiler do you use ?

Maxim,

I still can't format the SD card on the ubuntu using VMware.

About the link, i already know it. The point is that i can't apply any
think in it until i finish my setup.

There must be an easier way to configure this SD card other than
linux ? - how come is doesn't have a way to make it on Windows ? - It
is soo silly that way.

There is a way in windows to format the card. I use it all the time.

Gerald

Have you tried just booting with a linux live cd? or using that
windows 'wubi' installer for ubuntu?

Regards,

Ahmad, I think you need to buy external USB-SD reader. I use it all the time with VMware and never have problems with it. I know that builtin card readers may be tricky to work with under Linux. Just spend $10 for USB card reader
